A device must never drop out. How GetERI synchronises 50 devices without losing data

Why we built our own synchronisation layer for GetERI: every device keeps working offline for long periods, operators don't notice signal drops, and the data is merged into one whole.

GetERI is responsible not only for the software but also for the devices that run in your operation: tills, terminals, readers, turnstiles, mobile apps. One thing has the highest priority: a device must never drop out, and working with it must stay smooth at all costs. That is why we designed our own device synchronisation layer for GetERI instead of adopting one of the usual approaches.

Why standard synchronisation is not enough

There are many ways to synchronise devices and the software inside them. Most of them assume that the connection to the server is available almost all the time and that a short outage can simply be waited out. In real operations, that is not the case.

GetERI has to handle every type of operation at every level: from a café with a single till to a manufacturing company or a chain of sites. The devices work in varying conditions, often with lost signal and sometimes with rough handling, however unintentional. A system that stops at such a moment slows the operation down and forces staff to improvise.

Every device also works offline

Every device we supply and activate in the GetERI system can keep working offline for extended periods. Not for a few minutes until the signal returns, but for hours or entire shifts. Staff sell, take orders, record attendance or open doors just as they do when the connection is fine.

This applies to any device running our software: tills and terminals, the access system, attendance readers and mobile apps.

Fifty devices that keep dropping out

The whole point of our synchronisation layer becomes clear in a larger operation. Imagine a business with a large number of devices, easily more than 50. Because of a building constructed like a Faraday cage, or because of inadequate coverage, these devices can drop out continuously and frequently while working, each at a different time.

Situation Standard approach GetERI
Short signal outage the device waits, staff stand idle staff keep working and notice nothing
Longer outage (hours) work stops or is recorded outside the system the device works from its own data, and everything is merged once the connection is restored
Several devices drop out at once conflicts, duplicates, manual corrections the data is assembled into one unambiguous whole
Broken or lost device data lost since the last backup separate backup of every device, fast restore without loss

Our system can assemble the data from the devices into a single, unambiguous result: no losses, no outages and no interruption of work. In the end, the ordinary user notices nothing, and that is exactly the point.

Backup and fast restore

Every device is also backed up separately. If it breaks, is lost or needs to be replaced, it can be restored very quickly and without data loss. The replacement device picks up where the original left off.

What this means for your operation

This is what allows us to vouch for smooth running: of production, of day-to-day operations, or of any part of the system that works with devices or mobile apps. The guarantee of smooth running is not a marketing line but a consequence of how the synchronisation is built.

For us, this is a highly professional approach to a problem that many systems treat only superficially. It is the result of long-term work in demanding conditions, where we focused on one thing only: the result and the continuity of operations. In implementation and Enterprise projects, this layer is part of the delivery regardless of the number of devices.

Questions and answers

What happens when a till or terminal loses its signal?

Nothing the operator has to deal with. The device keeps working from its local copy of the data, and once the connection returns, everything is merged with the rest of the system. Users usually don't even notice the outage.

How long can a device work offline?

For long periods, not just minutes. The devices are designed for sites with weak or intermittent signal, such as warehouses, production halls or buildings that act as a Faraday cage.

What if a device breaks or gets lost?

Every device is backed up continuously and separately. A replacement device is restored very quickly and without data loss, so operations carry on.
